Based on extensive interviews with potters and traders, it explains why the barter of pots continues to be practiced, and explores how pottery production and exchange practices may now be changing. The book provides a unique and detailed analysis of the interconnections between handicraft production, rural trade networks, and agriculture in an Andean context. Pots are mainly bartered for food crops within a non-monetary peasant economy distinct from the “conventional” market. This practice is an important food source for pottery traders; thus trader livelihoods are placed at the center of this qualitative study of pottery distribution. Of primary importance are: 1) the decision-making processes surrounding exchange activities, 2) how exchange choices produce distinct spatial patterns, and 3) how the marketing of pots impacts livelihoods. . 000780067 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed March 22, 2017). 000780067 650_0 $$aHandicraft industries$$zPeru$$vCase studies. 000780067 650_0 $$aPottery$$zPeru$$vCase studies. 000780067 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3319523309$$z9783319523309$$w(OCoLC)966551639 000780067 830_0 $$aSpringerBriefs in Latin American studies. 000780067 852__ $$bebk 000780067 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-52331-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000780067 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:780067$$pGLOBAL_SET 000780067 980__ $$aEBOOK 000780067 980__ $$aBIB 000780067 982__ $$aEbook 000780067 983__ $$aOnline 000780067 994__ $$a92$$bISE
