Summary
In this work, I use theatrical texts to trace the development of various models of white masculinity in the years between the establishment of the United States of America and the Jacksonian era of the 1830s. I will argue that, if we want to understand how working-class white men saw themselves as national subjects - what they aspired to and what they feared - the early American stage is the best place to look.
