The period is characterised by panic and chaos when few had any idea how religious, cultural, and social life would develop after the traumatic division of Christendom. While many saw the need for a secular power to define the truth others declared that their allegiances belonged elsewhere. Accordingly there was a constant battle between competing authorities for the right to declare what was the truth and so label opponents as liars. Issues of truth and lying were, therefore, a constant feature of everyday life and determined ideas of individual identity, politics, speech, sex, marriage, and social behaviour, as well as philosophy and religion. 000798856 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on August 22, 2017). 000798856 650_0 $$aTruthfulness and falsehood$$zEngland$$xHistory. 000798856 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9780198789468 000798856 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000798856 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780198789468.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000798856 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:798856$$pGLOBAL_SET 000798856 980__ $$aEBOOK 000798856 980__ $$aBIB 000798856 982__ $$aEbook 000798856 983__ $$aOnline
