He was responsible for the most significant sequence of works of art commissioned for the British churches in the twentieth century. They included music by Benjamin Britten, Leonard Bernstein and William Walton, visual art by Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and Marc Chagall, and poetry by W. H. Auden. Placing Hussey in theological context and in a period of rapid cultural change, it explores the making and reception of the commissions, and the longer-term influence of his work, still felt today. As well as contributing to the religious and cultural history of Britain, and of Anglo-Catholicism and the cathedrals in particular, the book will be of interest to all those concerned with the relationship between theology and the arts, and to historians of music and the visual arts. 000805713 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (viewed November 21, 2017). 000805713 60010 $$aHussey, Walter. 000805713 61020 $$aSt. Matthew's Church (Northampton, Northamptonshire) 000805713 61020 $$aChichester Cathedral. 000805713 650_0 $$aArt patrons$$zEngland$$vBiography. 000805713 650_0 $$aChristian art and symbolism$$zEngland. 000805713 830_0 $$aHistories of the sacred and the secular 1700-2000. 000805713 852__ $$bebk 000805713 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1057/978-1-137-36910-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000805713 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:805713$$pGLOBAL_SET 000805713 980__ $$aEBOOK 000805713 980__ $$aBIB 000805713 982__ $$aEbook 000805713 983__ $$aOnline 000805713 994__ $$a92$$bISE
