When war broke out between the United States and Japan, he and his family were incarcerated along with the more than 100,000 ethnic Japanese located on the West Coast. Sent to detention camps at Puyallup, Washington, and then Minidoka in Idaho, Fujii documented his daily experiences in words and art. "The Hope of Another Spring" reveals the rare find of a large and heretofore unknown collection of art produced during World War II. The centerpiece of the collection is Fujiis illustrated diary that historian Roger Daniels has called the most remarkable document created by a Japanese American prisoner during the wartime incarceration. Barbara Johns presents Takuichi Fujiis life story and his artistic achievements within the social and political context of the time. Sandy Kita, the artists grandson, provides translations and an introduction to the diary. This is a significant contribution to Asian American studies, American and regional history, and art history. 000806157 60010 $$aFujii, Takuichi,$$d1891-1964. 000806157 60010 $$aFujii, Takuichi,$$d1891-1964$$xCriticism and interpretation. 000806157 61020 $$aPuyallup Assembly Center (Puyallup, Wash.) 000806157 650_0 $$aJapanese American painters$$vBiography. 000806157 650_0 $$aJapanese American painters$$vDiaries. 000806157 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1939-1945$$xPersonal narratives, Japanese American. 000806157 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1939-1945$$xConcentration camps$$zUnited States. 000806157 650_0 $$aJapanese Americans$$xEvacuation and relocation, 1942-1945. 000806157 650_0 $$aJapanese Americans$$zWashington (State)$$xHistory$$y20th century. 000806157 7001_ $$aDaniels, Roger,$$eauthor of foreword. 000806157 7001_ $$aKita, Sandy,$$d1950-$$ewriter of introduction. 000806157 830_0 $$aScott and Laurie Oki series in Asian American studies. 000806157 85200 $$bgen$$hND237.F785$$iH67$$i2017 000806157 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:806157$$pGLOBAL_SET 000806157 980__ $$aBIB 000806157 980__ $$aBOOK
