The resulting convict leasing system ensnared not only men but also African American women, who were forced to labor in camps and factories to make profits for private investors. In this vivid work of history, Talitha L. LeFlouria draws from a rich array of primary sources to piece together the stories of these women, recounting what they endured in Georgia's prison system and what their labor accomplished. LeFlouria argues that African American women's presence within the convict lease and chain-gang systems of Georgia helped to modernize the South by creating a new and dynamic set of skills for black women. At the same time, female inmates struggled to resist physical and sexual exploitation and to preserve their human dignity within a hostile climate of terror. This revealing history redefines the social context of black women's lives and labor in the New South and allows their stories to be told for the first time"--Provided by publisher. 000809197 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000809197 650_0 $$aConvict labor$$zGeorgia$$xHistory$$y19th century. 000809197 650_0 $$aConvict labor$$zGeorgia$$xHistory$$y20th century. 000809197 650_0 $$aAfrican American women$$zGeorgia$$xSocial conditions. 000809197 650_0 $$aAfrican American prisoners$$zGeorgia$$xSocial conditions. 000809197 650_0 $$aWomen prisoners$$zGeorgia$$xSocial conditions. 000809197 650_0 $$aPrisons and race relations$$zGeorgia$$xHistory. 000809197 651_0 $$aGeorgia$$xRace relations$$xHistory$$y19th century. 000809197 651_0 $$aGeorgia$$xRace relations$$xHistory$$y20th century. 000809197 651_0 $$aGeorgia$$xEconomic conditions$$y19th century. 000809197 651_0 $$aGeorgia$$xEconomic conditions$$y20th century. 000809197 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aLeFlouria, Talitha L.$$tChained in silence.$$dChapel Hill : University of North Carolina Press, 2015$$z9781469622477$$w(DLC) 2014034896 000809197 830_0 $$aJustice, power, and politics. 000809197 852__ $$bacq 000809197 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central 000809197 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=3571144$$zOnline Access 000809197 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:809197$$pGLOBAL_SET 000809197 980__ $$aEBOOK 000809197 980__ $$aBIB 000809197 982__ $$aEbook 000809197 983__ $$aOnline
