In particular, it considers how steam propulsion made vessels utterly dependent on a particular resource - coal - and its distribution around the world. In doing so, it shows that the 'coal question' was central to imperial defence and the protection of trade, requiring the creation of infrastructures that spanned the globe. This infrastructure required careful management, and the processes involved show the development of bureaucracy and the reliance on the 'contractor state' to ensure this was both robust and able to allow swift mobilisation in war. The requirement to stop regularly at foreign stations also brought men of the Royal navy into contact with local coal heavers, as well as indigenous populations and landscapes. These encounters and their dissemination are crucial to our understanding of imperial relationships and imaginations at the height of the imperial age. 000823822 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000823822 61010 $$aGreat Britain.$$bRoyal Navy$$xHistory$$y19th century. 000823822 650_0 $$aCoal trade$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y19th century. 000823822 650_0 $$aSteamboats$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y19th century. 000823822 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xColonies$$xHistory. 000823822 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xHistory, Naval$$y19th century. 000823822 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aGray, Steven.$$tSteam power and sea power$$z9781137576415$$w(DLC) 2017948685$$w(OCoLC)992788503 000823822 830_0 $$aCambridge imperial and post-colonial studies series. 000823822 852__ $$bebk 000823822 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1057/978-1-137-57642-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000823822 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:823822$$pGLOBAL_SET 000823822 980__ $$aEBOOK 000823822 980__ $$aBIB 000823822 982__ $$aEbook 000823822 983__ $$aOnline 000823822 994__ $$a92$$bISE
