Importantly, it argues that this urgent problem of justice is changeable. Sprague uses the capabilities approach to bring a theory of health justice, together with multiple sources of evidence, to investigate the complex problem of HIV and accompanying poor health outcomes in black South African women. Motivated by a concern for application of knowledge, this work discusses how to better conceptualise what health justice demands of state and society, and how to mobilise available evidence on health inequities in ways that compel greater state action to address problems of gender and health. HIV in women, and possible responses, are investigated on four distinct levels: conceptual, social structure, health systems, and law. The analysis demonstrates that this problem is indeed modifiable with long-term interventions and an enhanced state response targeted at multiple levels. This book will be of interest to academics and students in the social health sciences, gender and development studies, and global health, as well as HIV/health activists, government officials, policy makers, HIV clinicians and health providers interested in HIV. 000826930 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (viewed March 26, 2018) 000826930 650_0 $$aHIV-positive women$$zSouth Africa$$xSocial conditions. 000826930 650_0 $$aAIDS (Disease) in women$$xSocial aspects$$zSouth Africa. 000826930 650_0 $$aWomen$$xHealth and hygiene$$zSouth Africa. 000826930 650_0 $$aSocial sciences. 000826930 650_0 $$aSociology. 000826930 650_0 $$aSocial justice. 000826930 650_0 $$aHuman rights. 000826930 650_0 $$aSex (Psychology) 000826930 650_0 $$aGender expression. 000826930 650_0 $$aGender identity. 000826930 651_0 $$aAfrica$$xPolitics and government. 000826930 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z1137559969$$z9781137559968$$w(OCoLC)994727192 000826930 830_0 $$aGlobal research in gender, sexuality and health. 000826930 852__ $$bebk 000826930 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1057/978-1-137-55997-5$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000826930 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:826930$$pGLOBAL_SET 000826930 980__ $$aEBOOK 000826930 980__ $$aBIB 000826930 982__ $$aEbook 000826930 983__ $$aOnline 000826930 994__ $$a92$$bISE
