From a heuristic perspective, it is sketching out a framework for a global sociology of modernity. This framework attempts to accommodate a core assumption of classical modernization theory - the global nature of modernity - with the pluralistic perspective of the rise of a multiplicity of historically concrete forms of modernities. It tries to reconcile a universalistic concept of modernity with the fact of modernity's multiple historical realizations. At the same time, this discussion of contemporary social theory puts forward a critique of the still so conveniently applied equation of modernization with Westernization. In empirical terms, the book substantiates this critique in drawing its exemplary illustrations from the historical experience of Muslim peoples. Bringing Muslim history and discussions in social theory together, this book represents a synthesis of research efforts in sociology and Islamic studies. 000827353 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (viewed April 04, 2017). 000827353 650_0 $$aIslam and civil society. 000827353 650_0 $$aIslam$$xSocial aspects. 000827353 650_0 $$aSocial change$$zMiddle East. 000827353 650_0 $$aCivilization, Modern. 000827353 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aJung, Dietrich.$$tMuslim history and social theory : a global sociology of modernity.$$dCham, Switzerland : Springer, c2017$$z9783319526072 000827353 830_0 $$aModern Muslim world. 000827353 852__ $$bebk 000827353 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-52608-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000827353 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:827353$$pGLOBAL_SET 000827353 980__ $$aEBOOK 000827353 980__ $$aBIB 000827353 982__ $$aEbook 000827353 983__ $$aOnline 000827353 994__ $$a92$$bISE
