Instead of offering a sweeping and generalizing overview of the past, we propose a 'micro-spatial'approach, combining micro-history with the concept of space. A focus on primary sources and awareness of the historical discontinuities and unevennesses characterizes the global history that emerges here. We use labour as our lens in this volume. The resulting micro-spatial history of labour addresses the management and recruitment of labour, its voluntary and coerced spatial mobility, its political perception and representation and the workers'own agency and social networks. The individual chapters are written by contributors whose expertise covers the late medieval Eastern Mediterranean to present-day Sierra Leone, through early modern China and Italy, eighteenth-century Cuba and the Malvinas/Falklands, the journeys of a missionary between India and Brazil and those of Christian captives across the Ottoman empire and Spain. The result is a highly readable volume that addresses key theoretical and methodological questions in historiography. 000838362 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000838362 650_0 $$aHistory. 000838362 650_0 $$aHistoriography. 000838362 650_0 $$aWorld history. 000838362 650_0 $$aLabor$$xHistory. 000838362 7001_ $$aDe Vito, Christian G.,$$eeditor. 000838362 7001_ $$aGerritsen, Anne,$$eeditor. 000838362 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aDe Vito, Christian G.$$tMicro-Spatial Histories of Global Labour.$$dCham : Springer International Publishing, ©2017$$z9783319584898 000838362 852__ $$bebk 000838362 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-58490-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000838362 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:838362$$pGLOBAL_SET 000838362 980__ $$aEBOOK 000838362 980__ $$aBIB 000838362 982__ $$aEbook 000838362 983__ $$aOnline 000838362 994__ $$a92$$bISE
