This definition has always been considered an unsolvable problem. Starting with a detailed analysis of the Greek text, and of the various attempts to emend the text in order to make sense of it, the book provides an analytical description of the critical literature, showing that the solutions proposed up to now need to be revised. The possible solution is found in viewing the XX chapter of the Poetics not as a classification of parts of speech, as it was usually supposed, but by considering the biological definitions of arthron in Aristotle's corpus. This leads to the conclusion that, in linguistics as well as in biology, arthron is a "joint". In this light, the book offers a new textual conjecture for the first example of arthron in the Poetics. 000838449 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (viewed April 10, 2018). 000838449 60000 $$aAristotle.$$tPoetics.$$lEnglish$$xCriticism and interpretation. 000838449 650_0 $$aLanguage and languages$$xPhilosophy. 000838449 650_0 $$aBiolinguistics. 000838449 650_0 $$aArthron (Greek word) 000838449 650_0 $$aGreek language$$xMetaphor. 000838449 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z3319773259$$z9783319773254$$w(OCoLC)1022776481 000838449 830_0 $$aUNIPA Springer series. 000838449 852__ $$bebk 000838449 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-77326-1$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000838449 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:838449$$pGLOBAL_SET 000838449 980__ $$aEBOOK 000838449 980__ $$aBIB 000838449 982__ $$aEbook 000838449 983__ $$aOnline 000838449 994__ $$a92$$bISE
