In this book, Tracy Dennison shows how Russian society looked from below, and finds nothing like the collective, redistributive, and market-averse behaviour often attributed to Russian peasants. On the contrary, the Russian rural population was as integrated into regional and even national markets as many of its west European counterparts. Serfdom was a loose garment that enabled different landlords to shape economic institutions, especially property rights, in widely diverse ways. Highly coercive and backward regimes on some landlords' estates existed side-by-side with surprisingly liberal approximations to a rule of law. This book paints a vivid and colourful picture of the everyday reality of rural Russia before the 1861 abolition of serfdom"--Provided by publisher. 000840017 650_0 $$aSerfdom$$zRussia$$xHistory. 000840017 650_0 $$aPeasants$$zRussia$$xEconomic conditions. 000840017 650_0 $$aPeasants$$zRussia$$xSocial conditions. 000840017 650_0 $$aLand tenure$$zRussia$$xHistory. 000840017 650_0 $$aRight of property$$zRussia$$xHistory. 000840017 650_0 $$aAgriculture$$xEconomic aspects$$zRussia$$xHistory. 000840017 650_0 $$aAgriculture$$xSocial aspects$$zRussia$$xHistory. 000840017 651_0 $$aRussia$$xRural conditions. 000840017 651_0 $$aRussia$$xEconomic conditions$$yTo 1861. 000840017 651_0 $$aRussia$$xCommerce$$xHistory. 000840017 655_0 $$aElectronic books 000840017 830_0 $$aCambridge studies in economic history. 000840017 852__ $$bebk 000840017 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete $$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=691903$$zOnline Access 000840017 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:840017$$pGLOBAL_SET 000840017 980__ $$aBIB 000840017 980__ $$aEBOOK 000840017 982__ $$aEbook 000840017 983__ $$aOnline
