By the time that the Germans agreed to an armistice forty-seven days later, the Meuse-Argonne Campaign would gain the distinction of being the largest and most costly military operation in American history. Over a million American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, as well as 135,000 French soldiers, participated in the offensive. Although the First Army had committed to this battle long before most of its doughboys had mastered the skills required to fight a mass industrialized war, the Americans persevered and gradually ground down the German units opposing them. Unfortunately, this approach came at a high price: 26,277 men killed and another 95,786 wounded as the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) learned how to wage a modern war against a skilled opponent. 000851131 61010 $$aUnited States.$$bArmy.$$bAmerican Expeditionary Forces$$xHistory. 000851131 61017 $$aUnited States.$$bArmy.$$bAmerican Expeditionary Forces.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst00589449 000851131 650_0 $$aArgonne, Battle of the, France, 1918. 000851131 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1914-1918$$xCampaigns$$zWestern Front. 000851131 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1914-1918$$xCampaigns$$zMeuse River Valley. 000851131 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1914-1918$$zUnited States. 000851131 7102_ $$aCenter of Military History,$$eissuing body. 000851131 77608 $$iFaulkner, Richard Shawn.$$tMeuse-Argonne 26 September-11 November 1918$$w(OCoLC)1055767012 000851131 830_0 $$aU.S. Army campaigns of World War I. 000851131 85200 $$bgen$$hD545.A63$$iF38$$i2018 000851131 85640 $$zOnline access$$uhttps://purl.fdlp.gov/GPO/gpo109788 000851131 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:851131$$pGLOBAL_SET 000851131 980__ $$aBIB 000851131 980__ $$aBOOK 000851131 983__ $$aOnline
