While Marston is usually famed more for his very public rivalry with Jonson than for the quality of his plays, this book argues that such a view of Marston seriously underestimates his importance to the theatre of his time. In it, the author contends that Marston's plays represent an experiment in a new kind of satiric drama, with origins in the humanist tradition of serio ludere. His works--deliberately unpredictable, inconsistent and metatheatrical--subvert theatrical conventions and provide confusingly multiple perspectives on the action, forcing their spectators to engage actively with the drama and the moral dilemmas that it presents. The book argues that Marston's work thus anticipates and perhaps influenced the mid-period work of Ben Jonson, in plays such as Sejanus, Volpone and The Alchemist"--$$cProvided by publisher. 000857345 60010 $$aMarston, John,$$d1575?-1634$$xCriticism and interpretation. 000857345 60010 $$aJonson, Ben,$$d1573?-1637$$xCriticism and interpretation. 000857345 650_0 $$aTheater$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y16th century. 000857345 650_0 $$aTheater$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y17th century. 000857345 650_0 $$aEnglish drama$$yEarly modern and Elizabethan, 1500-1600$$xHistory and criticism. 000857345 650_0 $$aEnglish drama$$y17th century$$xHistory and criticism. 000857345 650_0 $$aSatire, English$$xHistory and criticism. 000857345 650_0 $$aTheater audiences$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y16th century. 000857345 650_0 $$aTheater audiences$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y17th century. 000857345 852__ $$bebk 000857345 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-1-137-56399-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000857345 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:857345$$pGLOBAL_SET 000857345 980__ $$aEBOOK 000857345 980__ $$aBIB 000857345 982__ $$aEbook 000857345 983__ $$aOnline 000857345 994__ $$a92$$bISE
