Summary
Burnaby was a captain in the British Army who spent his winter leave of absence of 1876 riding 2000 miles through Asiatic Turkey, on the eve of the Russo-Turkish War. Burnaby questioned everyone he met regarding the imminent war; the author believed, from the impressions of his informants, that the Ottoman Empire would probably lose. By the time he published the account the Turkish Army had "gallantly withstood their foe. My reasons for arriving at the above-mentioned opinion will be found in these volumes. They merely contain a sort of verbal photograph ... of what I saw and heard during the journey."
