This large collection from the British Library is a repository of periodicals that British travelers relied upon during the second half of the nineteenth century, after trains had overtaken horses as the primary mode of long-distance transportation. Railway guides and train timetables kept travelers on schedule and in the know by including monthly almanacs and numerous product advertisements within their pages. In fact, it appears that more space is devoted to advertisements than to any other type of content in these guides. The majority of the guides are limited to travel within Britain and Europe, but a few represent other areas, including an almanac devoted to Jamaica, a Hawaiian tourist guide, a directory for British Columbia, and an overland guide to India, Egypt, and China. This collection will be of interest to those studying the history of advertising as well as the history of travel and British history.
