The maps included in this NCCO collection are a sampling of the Society's outstanding holdings, ranging in date from the mid-eighteenth century to around 1910. Featured here are maps produced in the United States before 1820, including maps related to troop movement and border disputes during the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Many of these maps capture methods of transportation in this era, including post roads, canals, and ship routes. Expansion of the new nation is documented through historical maps relating to each of today's American states. These maps provide information on settlement, transportation, and urban development. They include state and territorial maps, county maps, and maps of specific urban areas, often to the street level. Maps of Philadelphia show the city's growth over time. Maps of counties often feature border illustrations and data sets that expound on local economic production, educational institutions, and religious affiliations. Researchers will find maps showing missionary activity in Hawaii, geographic interactions with native people in the Dakota Territory, and the establishment of the U.S.-Canadian border in the Pacific Northwest. North American maps selected for this collection illustrate important trade and political relationships between Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands and show the fluidity of travel of people and goods through these geographic spaces. Maps of selected European countries are also featured; many of these maps were owned by travelers and are annotated or marked with specific routes or destinations.}, url = {http://library.usi.edu/record/872136}, }
