Summary
The British Colonial Office collections include a broad array of documents concerned with the activities of the British in Africa from the end of the eighteenth century through the middle of the nineteenth century. Exploration, military and missionary activity, and scientific, colonial, and commercial endeavors are highlighted--along with items more explicitly related to slavery. The collection features letters, journals, and diaries; account books, inventories, and other administrative records; formal reports, treaties, royal declarations, and parliamentary papers. Arranged in rough chronological order, the twenty-five volumes contain five that are concerned with the Niger Expedition to Abolish the Slave Trade, 18391844.
