Summary
The documents in this collection, assembled by book dealer and philanthropist Charles F. Heartman and acquired by Xavier University in 1945, consist of over 4,000 items relating to the social, economic, civil, and legal status of black slaves and free people of color primarily in Louisiana and especially in New Orleans. Dating from 1724 to 1897, and including an extensive array of administrative records, the collection also features manuscripts by Isaiah Thomas, Charles G. Leland, David Wilmot, General P. T. F. Beauregard, Frederick Douglass, and other historical figures.
