Published annually in Paris from 1851 until 1868, Annuaire des deux mondes: histoire générale des divers états printed yearly updates of the political and economic situation in the countries of the New and Old Worlds, including colonies and independent states. The periodical went into great depth in its analysis of each country and, in addition to sketching the general situation, also discussed internal affairs, diplomatic relations, literature, and culture. Slavery received much attention, whether abolition of slavery had already been accomplished, was in progress, or was as yet merely being debated. Annuaire des deux mondes would provide census figures for slaves or freedpeople, measures taken to ensure a smooth transition to emancipation, compare the economic situation of slavery versus freedom where it applied, and print speeches from debates regarding slavery and emancipation.
