N1 - Title from caption. N1 - The New England spectator was a weekly periodical published in Boston from 1834-1838. The newspaper's motto was "A family newspaper, designed to promote the study of the Bible, family religion, active piety, the abolition of war, slavery, licentiousness, and the circulation of useful intelligence." The motto indicated the newspaper's religiously anti-slavery stance. In addition, the periodical advocated women's participation in the anti-slavery movement, calling upon them to petition for an end to slavery. Women played an important role in the abolitionist movement, and Sarah Grimké wrote a series of letters in the New England spectator in 1837 insisting that women deserved equal rights with men. The newspaper often found itself in conflict with William Lloyd Garrison's more radical Liberator. N1 - Wm. S. Porter, editor and proprietor.
