The bitter dispute between ethnic groups in the US from 1914-17--a period of time characterized as the "culture wars"--laid the groundwork both for US intervention in the European balance of power in 1917 and for the creation of what would eventually become a lasting Anglo-American alliance. Specifically, the vigorous assault on English "civilization" launched by two large ethnic groups in America (the Irish-Americans and the German-Americans) had the unintended effect of causing Americas demographic majority at the time (the English-descended Americans) to regard the prospect of an Anglo-American alliance in an entirely new manner. The author contemplates why the Anglo-American "great rapprochement" of 1898 failed to generate the desired "Anglo-Saxon" alliance in Britain, and in so doing features theoretically informed inquiries into debates surrounding both the origins of the war in 1914 and the origins of the American intervention decision nearly three years later. David G. Haglund is Professor of Political Studies at Queen's University, Canada. His research focuses on transatlantic security and Canadian and American international security policy. 000890718 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on June 21, 2019). 000890718 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xRelations$$zGreat Britain. 000890718 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xRelations$$zUnited States. 000890718 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xCivilization$$y1865-1918. 000890718 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xForeign relations$$y1913-1921. 000890718 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHaglund, David G.$$tThe US Culture Wars and the Anglo-American Special Relationship$$dCham : Palgrave Macmillan US,c2019$$z9783030185480 000890718 852__ $$bebk 000890718 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-18549-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000890718 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:890718$$pGLOBAL_SET 000890718 980__ $$aEBOOK 000890718 980__ $$aBIB 000890718 982__ $$aEbook 000890718 983__ $$aOnline 000890718 994__ $$a92$$bISE
