Arthur Lewis, the founding father of development economics, proposed a dualist model of economic development in which 'surplus' (predominantly under-employed) labour shifted from lower to higher productivity work. In practice, historically, this meant that labour was initially drawn out of subsistence agriculture into low-wage, labour-intensive manufacturing, including in clothing production, before shifting into higher-wage work. This development strategy has become unfashionable. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) worries that low-wage, labour-intensive industry promises little more than an impoverishing 'race to the bottom'. This text argues that decent work fundamentalism, that is the promotion of higher wages and labour productivity at the cost of lower-wage job destruction, is a utopian vision with potentially dystopic consequences for countries with high open unemployment, many of which are in Southern Africa. 000890975 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on June 13, 2019). 000890975 650_0 $$aDual economy$$zAfrica, Southern. 000890975 650_0 $$aLabor economics$$zAfrica, Southern. 000890975 650_0 $$aEconomic development$$zAfrica, Southern. 000890975 651_0 $$aAfrica, Southern$$xEconomic conditions. 000890975 7001_ $$aSeekings, Jeremy,$$eauthor. 000890975 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z9780198841463 000890975 830_0 $$aCritical frontiers of theory, research, and policy in international development studies. 000890975 830_0 $$aOxford scholarship online. 000890975 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000890975 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198841463.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000890975 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:890975$$pGLOBAL_SET 000890975 980__ $$aEBOOK 000890975 980__ $$aBIB 000890975 982__ $$aEbook 000890975 983__ $$aOnline
