Mises had a 'deep emotional attachment' to the 'free' market and Hayek believed that 'science' was driven by shallow emotions. Hayek believed in 'democracy as a system of peaceful change of government; but that's all its whole advantage is, no other.' He felt democracy simply made it possible to get rid of the government 'we' dislike. Hayek bemoaned the decay of superstition -- the 'supporting moral beliefs' - that are required to maintain 'our' civilization. Yet his Road to Serfdom neglected 'another road to serfdom' - the possibility that there were multiple threats to individual freedom - not just State power. In contrast, many other scholars and public intellectual warned of the dangers of the concentration of power in institutions other than the State. Today those fears have materialized in the guise of wealthy mega-corporations and billionaires whose influence on government, on elections, on popular culture and on the dominant ideology, have been able to change the rules of the market in their favour - so that 'we' have now become trapped in a new kind of serfdom. With contributions from a range of highly regarded scholars, this volume continues the Biography's rich exploration of Hayek's work and beliefs.--$$cProvided by publisher. 000891095 60010 $$aHayek, Friedrich A. von$$q(Friedrich August),$$d1899-1992. 000891095 650_0 $$aEconomics$$xHistory$$y20th century. 000891095 650_0 $$aEconomists$$zAustria$$vBiography. 000891095 650_0 $$aEconomists$$zGreat Britain$$vBiography. 000891095 7001_ $$aLeeson, Robert,$$eeditor. 000891095 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783319944111 000891095 830_0 $$aArchival insights into the evolution of economics. 000891095 85280 $$bebk$$hSpringerLink 000891095 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-94412-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000891095 884__ $$aLDL ebooks ONIX to marcxml transformation using Record_Load-eBooks_Legal_Deposit_onix2marc_v2-1.xsl$$g20180828$$kcom.springer.onix.9783319944128$$qUk 000891095 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:891095$$pGLOBAL_SET 000891095 980__ $$aEBOOK 000891095 980__ $$aBIB 000891095 982__ $$aEbook 000891095 983__ $$aOnline 000891095 994__ $$a92$$bISE
