It is commonly thought that East Asian countries like China and Japan maintained a stance of so-called national isolation during the period from the seventeenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century. It is true that diplomatic relations between Qing China and Tokugawa Japan could have not been established for reasons such as guarantees of security; however, every year merchants in junks voyaged to Nagasaki and carried out transactions with Japanese merchants or business agents. How this kind of trade relation was maintained stably without any diplomatic guarantees and in which way the governments of the two sides edged into the trade and accommodated the trade conflicts and institutional frictions are essential but seldom-emphasized topics. This book aims to shed light on these issues and thereby examine the character of the unique trade order in early modern East Asia as well, by analyzing a large quantity of the seldom-used and unpublished Chinese and Japanese primary and secondary sources. 000891367 588__ $$aVendor-supplied metadata. 000891367 650_0 $$aBalance of trade$$zChina. 000891367 650_0 $$aBalance of trade$$zJapan. 000891367 650_0 $$aForeign trade regulation$$zChina. 000891367 650_0 $$aForeign trade regulation$$zJapan. 000891367 651_0 $$aChina$$xCommerce$$zJapan. 000891367 651_0 $$aJapan$$xCommerce$$zChina. 000891367 651_0 $$aChina$$xForeign economic relations$$zJapan. 000891367 651_0 $$aJapan$$xForeign economic relations$$zChina. 000891367 830_0 $$aStudies in economic history (Springer (Firm)) 000891367 852__ $$bebk 000891367 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-13-7685-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000891367 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:891367$$pGLOBAL_SET 000891367 980__ $$aEBOOK 000891367 980__ $$aBIB 000891367 982__ $$aEbook 000891367 983__ $$aOnline 000891367 994__ $$a92$$bISE
