Unlike newly founded temples, which were celebrated for their novelty, temple renovations were oriented toward the past. Kings took the opportunity to rehearse a selective history of the temple, evoking certain past traditions and omitting others. In this way, temple renovations were a kind of historiography. Andrew R. Davis demonstrates a pattern in the rhetoric of temple renovation texts: that kings in ancient Mesopotamia, Israel, Syria and Persia used temple renovation to correct, or at least distance themselves from, some turmoil of recent history and to associate their reigns with an earlier and more illustrious past. 000892448 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on July 10, 2019). 000892448 650_0 $$aTemples$$xRemodeling$$zMiddle East$$xHistory$$yTo 1500. 000892448 651_0 $$aMiddle East$$xKings and rulers$$xReligious aspects. 000892448 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z9780190868963 000892448 830_0 $$aOxford scholarship online. 000892448 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000892448 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190868963.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000892448 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:892448$$pGLOBAL_SET 000892448 980__ $$aEBOOK 000892448 980__ $$aBIB 000892448 982__ $$aEbook 000892448 983__ $$aOnline
