The Society was a private dining and debate club that gathered together a latter-day clerisy. Building on the tradition of the Cambridge Apostles, they elected talented members from across the Victorian intellectual spectrum: Bishops, one Cardinal, philosophers, men of science, literary figures, and politicians. The Society included in its 62 members prominent figures such as T.H. Huxley, William Gladstone, Walter Bagehot, Henry Edward Manning, John Ruskin, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. This title moves beyond Alan Willard Brown's 1947 pioneering study of the Metaphysical Society by offering a more detailed analysis of its inner dynamics and its larger impact outside the dining room at the Grosvenor Hotel. 000899798 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on August 30, 2019). 000899798 61020 $$aMetaphysical Society (Great Britain) 000899798 650_0 $$aPhilosophy, British$$y19th century. 000899798 650_0 $$aMetaphysics. 000899798 7001_ $$aMarshall, Catherine,$$d1973-$$eeditor. 000899798 7001_ $$aLightman, Bernard V.,$$d1950-$$eeditor. 000899798 7001_ $$aEngland, Richard,$$d1968 October 7-$$eeditor. 000899798 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z9780198846499 000899798 830_0 $$aOxford scholarship online. 000899798 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000899798 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198846499.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000899798 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:899798$$pGLOBAL_SET 000899798 980__ $$aEBOOK 000899798 980__ $$aBIB 000899798 982__ $$aEbook 000899798 983__ $$aOnline
