Charles Swaine was clerk of the California, according to a license issued by Samuel Ogle, governor of Maryland, dated Nov. 3, 1750, and a letter from Benjamin Franklin to Cadwallader Coldan, dated Feb. 28, 1753. cf. Notes and queries, London, Nov. 6, 1943, p. 284-285. Theodorus Swaine Drage also has been named the clerk of the California. cf. Barrow, Sir John, bart. A chronological history of voyages...
