It contextualises this diplomatic mission in the wider remit of Anglo-Afghan relations and diplomacy from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, examining the networks of family and profession that established the institutions colonial foundations and its connections across South Asia and the Indian Ocean. The study presents the British Legation as a late imperial institution, which materialised colonialism's governmental practices in the age of independence. Ultimately, it demonstrates the continuation of asymmetries forged in the Anglo-Afghan encounter and shows how these were transformed into instances of diplomatic inequality in the realm of international relations. Approaching diplomacy through the themes of performance, the body and architecture, and in the context of knowledge transfers, this work offers new perspectives on international relations through a cultural history of diplomacy. 000914920 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 08, 2019). 000914920 651_0 $$aAfghanistan$$xForeign relations$$zGreat Britain. 000914920 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xForeign relations$$zAfghanistan. 000914920 651_0 $$aAfghanistan$$xHistory$$y20th century. 000914920 830_0 $$aCambridge imperial and post-colonial studies series. 000914920 852__ $$bebk 000914920 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-23960-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000914920 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:914920$$pGLOBAL_SET 000914920 980__ $$aEBOOK 000914920 980__ $$aBIB 000914920 982__ $$aEbook 000914920 983__ $$aOnline 000914920 994__ $$a92$$bISE
