Exile was central to state and nation formation, playing a role in the emergence of territorial borders and Romantic notions of national difference, while creating a transnational political culture that spanned the new independent nations. Analyzing the mobility of a large cohort of largely elite political émigrés from Chile and the Río de la Plata across much of South America before 1862, Edward Blumenthal reinterprets the political thought of well-known figures in a transnational context of exile. As Blumenthal shows, exile was part of a reflexive process in which elites imagined the nation from abroad while gaining experience building the same state and civil society institutions they considered integral to their republican nation-building projects. 000916101 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed October 30, 2019). 000916101 650_0 $$aNation-building$$zArgentina. 000916101 650_0 $$aNation-building$$zChile. 000916101 650_0 $$aExile (Punishment) 000916101 651_0 $$aArgentina$$xIntellectual life. 000916101 651_0 $$aChile$$xIntellectual life. 000916101 830_0 $$aPalgrave Macmillan transnational history series. 000916101 852__ $$bebk 000916101 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-27864-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000916101 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:916101$$pGLOBAL_SET 000916101 980__ $$aEBOOK 000916101 980__ $$aBIB 000916101 982__ $$aEbook 000916101 983__ $$aOnline 000916101 994__ $$a92$$bISE
