It makes particular reference to two key periods: the 1980s 'people's power' movement and the subsequent years of policy formulation from 1990 when the ANC began to design and implement a system of participatory democracy alongside a representative government. Through the examination of historic documents and in-depth interviews with former ANC activists, government officials and those involved in policy development, the author explores the inspiration for the party's commitment to establishing participatory democracy. The book combines democratic theory and political and intellectual history to look at the role of popular participation as part of a broader trajectory of the ANC's democratic thought. It critically engages with concepts used in the party's participatory discourse with a view to deepening our understanding of how ideas have shaped the construction of South Africa's democracy. Heidi Brooks is Senior Lecturer in Political and International Studies at IIE MSA and Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Social Change, University of Johannesburg, South Africa. She has produced several publications on the development of democratic thought in the ANC and on conceptions of democracy in South Africa. 000922380 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000922380 61020 $$aAfrican National Congress. 000922380 650_0 $$aPolitical parties$$zSouth Africa$$xHistory. 000922380 651_0 $$aSouth Africa$$xPolitics and government. 000922380 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aBrooks, Heidi.$$tAfrican National Congress and Participatory Democracy : From People's Power to Public Policy.$$dCham : Palgrave Macmillan US, ©2019$$z9783030257439 000922380 830_0 $$aTheories, concepts and practices of democracy. 000922380 852__ $$bebk 000922380 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-25744-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000922380 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:922380$$pGLOBAL_SET 000922380 980__ $$aEBOOK 000922380 980__ $$aBIB 000922380 982__ $$aEbook 000922380 983__ $$aOnline 000922380 994__ $$a92$$bISE
