It shows how, although one of the medieval world's largest empires, Jiankang has been rendered politically invisible by the standard narrative of Chinese nationalist history, and proposes a new framework and terminology for writing about medieval East Asia. The book pays particular attention to the problem of ethnic identification, rejecting the idea of "ethnic Chinese," and delineating several other, more useful ethnographic categories, using case studies in agriculture/foodways and vernacular languages. The most important, the Wuren of the lower Yangzi region, were believed to be inherently different from the peoples of the Central Plains, and the rest of the book addresses the extent of their ethnogenesis in the medieval era. 000929241 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on March 30, 2020). 000929241 650_0 $$aEthnicity$$zChina$$xHistory$$yTo 1500. 000929241 651_0 $$aChina$$xHistory$$y220-589. 000929241 651_0 $$aJiankang Fu (China)$$xHistory. 000929241 651_0 $$aChina$$xCivilization$$y221 B.C.-960 A.D. 000929241 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z9780190937546 000929241 830_0 $$aOxford studies in early empires. 000929241 830_0 $$aOxford scholarship online. 000929241 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000929241 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190937546.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000929241 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:929241$$pGLOBAL_SET 000929241 980__ $$aEBOOK 000929241 980__ $$aBIB 000929241 982__ $$aEbook 000929241 983__ $$aOnline
