In response, a number of tools and approaches - including some that are contested - are being explored and promoted. Biodiversity offsets are one such approach, and deserve critical examination since the debate surrounding them has often been oversimplified and lacking practical evidence. As such, this study presents a refined typology including seven types of biodiversity offsets and taking into account different contexts, governance arrangements and drivers. It draws on a detailed analysis of theoretical concepts to explain the voluntary implementation of biodiversity offsets using an internet-based (netnographic) research approach. Furthermore it builds on a broad global explorative base of 72 practical examples and presents in-depth case studies for each type. The results reveal a number of global tendencies that allow recommendations to be made for different locations, contexts and stakeholders. They also encourage the expansion of this research field to respond to the pressing needs of policy and practice. 000932909 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (viewed May 29, 2020). 000932909 650_0 $$aBiodiversity conservation. 000932909 650_0 $$aCarbon offsetting. 000932909 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z303025593X$$z9783030255930$$w(OCoLC)1108556810 000932909 852__ $$bebk 000932909 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-25594-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000932909 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:932909$$pGLOBAL_SET 000932909 980__ $$aEBOOK 000932909 980__ $$aBIB 000932909 982__ $$aEbook 000932909 983__ $$aOnline 000932909 994__ $$a92$$bISE
