This disconnect is the product of current scholarly assumptions about a lack of archival evidence that limits what we can say about those of African descent before modernity. This volume posits that the limitations are not in the archives, but in the methods we have constructed for locating and examining those archives. The essays that make up this volume offer new critical approaches to black African agency and the conceptualization of blackness in early modern literary works, historical documents, material and visual cultures, and performance culture. Ultimately, this critical anthology revises current understandings about racial discourse and the cultural contributions of black Africans in early modernity and in the present across the globe. 000940241 650_0 $$aCulture$$xStudy and teaching. 000940241 650_0 $$aEmigration and immigration. 000940241 650_0 $$aEthnology$$zAfrica. 000940241 650_0 $$aLatin American literature. 000940241 650_0 $$aLiterature, Modern. 000940241 651_0 $$aEurope$$xHistory$$y1492- 000940241 7001_ $$aSmith, Cassander L.,$$eeditor 000940241 7001_ $$aJones, Nicholas R.,$$eeditor 000940241 7001_ $$aGrier, Miles P.,$$eeditor 000940241 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783319767857 000940241 852__ $$bebk 000940241 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-76786-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000940241 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:940241$$pGLOBAL_SET 000940241 980__ $$aEBOOK 000940241 980__ $$aBIB 000940241 982__ $$aEbook 000940241 983__ $$aOnline 000940241 994__ $$a92$$bISE
