New areas of production entered these lucrative markets, particularly in the South Pacific, and plantation agriculture grew substantially in disparate areas such as Australia, Fiji, and Hawaii. The increase in production required an increase in labor; in the rush to fill the vacuum, freebooters and other unsavory characters began a slave trade in Melanesians and Polynesians that continued into the twentieth century. The White Pacific ranges over the broad expanse of Oceania to reconstruct the history of "blackbirding" (slave trading) in the region. It examines the role of U.S. citizens (many of them ex-slaveholders and ex-confederates) in the trade and its roots in Civil War dislocations. What unfolds is a dramatic tale of unfree labor, conflicts between formal and informal empire, white supremacy, threats to sovereignty in Hawaii, the origins of a White Australian policy, and the rise of Japan as a Pacific power and putative protector. It also pieces together a wonderfully suggestive history of the African American presence in the Pacific. Based on deft archival research in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, the United States, and Great Britain, The White Pacific uncovers a heretofore hidden story of race, labor, war, and intrigue that contributes significantly to the emerging intersectional histories of race and ethnicity. 000945673 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000945673 650_0 $$aSlavery$$zOceania$$xHistory. 000945673 650_0 $$aForced labor$$zOceania$$xHistory. 000945673 650_0 $$aImperialism. 000945673 651_0 $$aOceania$$xRace relations. 000945673 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xTerritories and possessions$$xHistory$$y19th century. 000945673 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xForeign relations$$zHawaii. 000945673 651_0 $$aHawaii$$xForeign relations$$zUnited States. 000945673 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHorne, Gerald.$$tWhite Pacific.$$dHonolulu : University of Hawai'i Press, ©2007$$z9780824831219$$z0824831217$$w(DLC) 2007005735$$w(OCoLC)85018181 000945673 85280 $$bebk$$heBooks on EBSCOhost 000945673 85640 $$3eBooks on EBSCOhost$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=236663$$zOnline Access 000945673 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:945673$$pGLOBAL_SET 000945673 980__ $$aEBOOK 000945673 980__ $$aBIB 000945673 982__ $$aEbook 000945673 983__ $$aOnline
