Virgil's influence on twelfth-century Latin epic is generally thought to be limited to verbal echoes and occasional narrative episodes, but evidence is presented that more global influences have been overlooked because ancient and medieval interpretations of the Aeneid, as preserved by the commentaries, were often radically different from modern readings of the Aeneid. By explaining how to interpret the Aeneid, these commentaries directly influenced the way in which twelfth-century Latin epic imitated the Aeneid. 000962513 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on March 12, 2021). 000962513 60000 $$aAlanus,$$cde Insulis,$$d-1202.$$tAnticlaudianus. 000962513 60000 $$aJohannes,$$cde Hauvilla,$$dactive 12th century.$$tArchitrenius. 000962513 60000 $$aJoseph,$$cof Exeter,$$d-approximately 1224.$$tDe bello Troiano. 000962513 60000 $$aWalter,$$cof Châtillon,$$dactive 1170-1180.$$tAlexandreis. 000962513 60000 $$aVirgil$$xCriticism and interpretation$$xHistory$$yTo 1500. 000962513 60000 $$aVirgil.$$tAeneis. 000962513 60000 $$aVirgil$$xInfluence. 000962513 650_0 $$aEpic poetry, Latin (Medieval and modern)$$xHistory and criticism. 000962513 650_0 $$aAllegory. 000962513 655_0 $$aElectronic books 000962513 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9780190091361 000962513 830_0 $$aOxford scholarship online. 000962513 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000962513 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190091361.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000962513 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:962513$$pGLOBAL_SET 000962513 980__ $$aEBOOK 000962513 980__ $$aBIB 000962513 982__ $$aEbook 000962513 983__ $$aOnline
