Summary
A decent, sensitive, intelligent but quite uneducated peasant boy, Tomas, grows up accepting without question all he hears about the Jews of the Ghetto, believing them the foredoomed property of the Devil. He is delivered to an old Jew of the Ghetto to be his bondservant. The Jew has a sweet young granddaughter to whom the overlord is attracted, but she rejects him and he seeks revenge. How Tomas resonds to all this, the important part he plays, and the change wrought in his thinking by his daily life among the Jews are the essence of the story.
