Description

Jewish Temple at 100 Washington Ave., also known as the Washington Avenue Temple. The B'nai Israel congregation was organized in 1857 and moved into this new building in 1903. It was destroyed by fire in 1925 but rebuilt. In 1980 this congregation consolidated with that of Adath Israel and moved into its facility, further east on Washington Ave. The building here was sold to Patchwork Central, an inner-city community organization. Due to a fire in the bakery, this building was once again destroyed by fire in 1983. Only the tower on the left remained and still remains today after Patchwork built a newer commercial style building. NOTE: Temple Adath B'nail Israel now worships in a modern building near the Warrick County line.
